Play the timing right and it’s legendary; wing it and you’ll spend an hour watching brake lights.

I drive this city every night, and nothing else on the July calendar comes close. AC/DC plays the Alamodome on Friday, July 24 — one night only on the Power Up Tour, their first San Antonio show in 18 years. 7:00 PM start, The Pretty Reckless opening, lights out around 10:30. The projected crowd is about 55,000, and I’ll be straight with you about that number: it’s an estimate, built on the dome’s concert setup holding up to roughly 64,000 and the fact that their 2025 US stadium dates were sellouts. Either way, it’s the biggest one-night crowd this city sees all month. Here’s how to do it right.

Know the zone before you know your seat

The Alamodome sits on the east edge of downtown, just across I-37 from the core — a 15–20 minute walk from most downtown hotels. That’s the single most useful fact of the night: you do not need a car. Stay downtown, walk over, walk back. Anyone who plans this evening around driving to the dome has already lost it.

The catch: the dome isn’t the only show

Same Friday, downtown is stacked. Lord Huron plays the Majestic at 8 — a strong draw in its own right. The Tobin has The Fixx on the outdoor plaza around 7:30, and the SA Film Festival is in full swing in the same building — screenings run July 21–26, so that Friday lands mid-festival. (That Fixx time is the venue’s typical start, not gospel — confirm on their site before you build your night on it. I won’t print a time I can’t stand behind.) Stack all of that on a stadium crowd and my event data says it plainly: the entire downtown core surges before 9 PM, then again at let-out. Which means one thing —

Book dinner NOW, and eat early

Reserve dinner today — that Friday, downtown kitchens will be slammed by 6. My rule stands: one block off the river is where the food earns your night — and I’ll own the one exception I make on the walk over. Both picks carry my seal.

My one on-the-river exception — it sits right on the walk, balcony over the water, and it still earns it: the longest wooden bar in Texas, the river drink, and a proper bar dinner.

4:30–5:00 — dinner. The 4:30 seating works anywhere but Bohanan’s (they open at 5); either way you’re done eating before downtown jams up.
6:00 — start walking. The crush arrives well before 7. Get in early, catch the opener, and remember it’s late July in San Antonio: the dome is ice-cold, the walk is not. Water before the walk.
10:30 — do not sprint for the exits. The whole building empties between 10:30 and 11. Fighting that wave is the worst 45 minutes of anyone’s trip.

The skip

Dropping a rideshare pin outside the Alamodome at 10:35. I’ve worked those let-outs — 55,000 people, one pin, one gridlocked grid. It’s the single worst ride in the city that night, and no app can fix it. The honest move: walk back toward the river, have the nightcap you were going to have anyway, and let the crush clear. By 11:30 downtown breathes again.

Not your crowd? The Friday still delivers

The Missions host Frisco at Wolff Stadium, 7:05 first pitch — cheap seats, cold beer, entirely outside the blast radius. One honest note: fireworks at the Wolff are a Saturday thing all season, so if the sky show matters to you, take Saturday the 25th’s game of that same series instead. If you’ve got kids or you just don’t need 55,000 people in your evening, that’s the most San Antonio night in town, and you can walk right up.

Bottom line: dinner at 4:30, inside by 6:30, patience at 10:30. Do those three things and July 24 is the night you tell people about.
