Forty-five minutes from downtown — the easiest Hill Country day trip I send people on. Gruene Hall, the Comal, Schlitterbahn, and a historic district that hasn't changed much since the 1870s.
The verdict
Gruene ties Fredericksburg for the best one-day trip out of San Antonio — the difference is Fredericksburg is wine and this is water and a dance hall. If it’s warm and you want a river, come here. If it’s about the tasting, go west. Either one beats everything else on my day-trips list; the rest are half-days or special cases. This is a strongest one-day pick.
When to go
Best months are April through October for tubing and water. Gruene Hall runs year-round — live music every weekend. Schlitterbahn is spring through fall, and peak summer gets crowded. Go on a weekday if you can; summer weekends are a different animal.

My order of operations: water first while it's cool, the historic district on foot, Gruene Hall once the sun starts dropping.

Built in 1878. Live music every weekend — country, Americana, Texas originals. Cold Lone Star on tap, no attitude at the door. Genuinely one of the best rooms in the state.

One of the best waterparks in the country, and it's right here.
Tubing rivers, slides, wave pools — consistently rated among the best in the U.S. Go early, lines build fast by midday. The original location beats the Galveston one.
Best for Families, summer
Spring-fed and cold, even in August.
Several outfitters rent tubes right on the river. Pack a cooler. Float time runs 1.5–3 hours depending on where you launch.
Best for The summer essential
Longer, wilder, and more scenic than the Comal.
Better for tubers who want more of an adventure than a lazy float. Outfitters line Gruene Road.
Best for Adults, more of a ride
The original 1870s cotton-gin town.
Boutique shops, the Grist Mill, antiques, and the Gruene General Store. You can walk the whole thing in under an hour.
Best for Couples, shoppers
The easy family add-on.
Spring-fed swimming pool, paddleboats, a miniature train, golf. Good call if Schlitterbahn is too much for the day.
Best for Families, kids
Twenty minutes further, worth it for a longer day.
Swimming, kayaking, scenic Hill Country drives. The add-on when Gruene alone doesn't fill the day.

Lunch pick
Grist Mill Restaurant in Gruene is the move — an old cotton-gin building right on the Guadalupe, a deck over the river, fried catfish, cold beer. Arrive before noon on weekends or you're standing in a line for it.
Act II · The day, laid out
Leave with the sun, come back before it sets. This is the order that keeps you ahead of the crowds.
Leave SA by 9am.
Tubing or Schlitterbahn mid-morning, before the crowds peak.
Lunch at Grist Mill or in the Historic District, around noon–1pm.
Gruene Hall in the afternoon — live music usually starts 3–4pm on weekends.
Head back to SA by 5–6pm.
