DAY TRIP FROM SAN ANTONIO · 1 HR 20 MIN
Austin. A completely different Texas, 80 miles north.
Live music, Lady Bird Lake, South Congress, Barton Springs, food trucks, and the kind of city energy SA doesn't have.
When To Go
AUSTIN BY ZONE
Where to spend your time
South Congress / SoCo
The strip most visitors should anchor to. Walkable, photogenic, great food and shops.
- South Congress Ave — boutiques, restaurants, murals, iconic Austin energy
- Güero's Taco Bar — SoCo institution, outdoor patio, strong margaritas
- Home Slice Pizza — classic Austin slice, long line worth it
- Torchy's Tacos — original location on South Congress
- Uncommon Objects — the best antique browsing in Austin
- The Continental Club — historic music venue, nightly shows
Lady Bird Lake / Barton Springs
Outdoor Austin at its best. The trail and the pool are free.
- Lady Bird Lake Hike & Bike Trail — 10-mile loop, kayaks and paddleboards rentable
- Barton Springs Pool — natural spring-fed pool, $5 entry, 68°F year-round
- Zilker Park — massive green space connecting everything
- Congress Avenue Bridge — Mexican free-tailed bat colony, dusk shows March–October
6th Street / Rainey Street
Live music and bar energy. Rainey Street is the better version of 6th for most visitors.
- Rainey Street — converted bungalows turned bars and restaurants, more local feel
- 6th Street Entertainment District — rowdier, tourist-facing, worth one pass
- Stubb's Amphitheater — outdoor concert venue, shows most weekends
- The Parish — small indoor music venue, great sound
The Domain / North Austin
Upscale shopping and food. Skip if time is tight, worth it for a longer day.
- The Domain — Apple Store energy meets outdoor mall, strong restaurant row
- North by Northwest Brewing — Texas-sized brewpub with a massive patio
FOOD PICKS
Willie's Austin shortlist
Best pizza in Austin. Go for a slice if the line is long.
Classic New York-style slice and whole pies. The line for the sit-down restaurant can be an hour — the slice-only next door is quicker.
The famous one. Worth it once — go early.
Line starts at 7am, sells out by noon. Cash payment. Brisket lives up to the legend but plan your day around it. Don't show up at 11am expecting to eat.
Best upscale dinner in Austin.
Japanese-influenced tasting menu format. Reservation essential — book weeks ahead on weekends. The late-night omakase is exceptional.
East Austin breakfast institution. Cash only, huge portions.
The Don Juan taco — six eggs, potatoes, cheese, and your choice of meat. The line is part of the experience. Go early on weekends.
SoCo patio, strong margaritas, reliable Tex-Mex.
SoCo institution with live music on the patio some nights. The chicken mole enchiladas are the move. Good for lunch.
Austin original. Queso, green chile pork, Trailer Park taco.
Counter service, creative tacos, strong queso. Hit the original South Congress location first.
Best casual burger in Austin.
Creative burgers, good fries, strong shakes. Consistent across locations. The Magic Shroom burger is the call.
