Theme Parks
Theme park days done right.
SA has two major theme park options within 30 minutes. Here's how to do each one without burning out by noon.
Animal shows, roller coasters, and Aquatica waterpark.
Animal-focused theme park with Shamu shows, a solid coaster lineup, and the Aquatica waterpark next door. Better for families with kids under 10 than Six Flags.
Best for: Younger kids, animal lovers, mixed ages
Pack sunscreen and a change of clothes. Aquatica gets crowded by 11am.
The main theme park — coasters, characters, and a waterpark in one.
Six Flags Fiesta Texas has roller coasters (Poltergeist, Iron Rattler), a full DC Comics character zone, and White Water Bay waterpark within the park. Best for ages 7+. Arrive at opening — parking lot fills by 10am.
Best for: Kids 7+ and teens, full-day trip
Buy tickets online the night before. Paid front-of-line passes are worth it in summer.
Theme Park Tips
Arrive at or before opening time to avoid waiting in line in the heat. Bring a refillable water bottle — most parks have free water at food stands. Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes. Plan 45–60 minutes for lunch before the 12:30pm rush hits.
Skip parking: use rideshare drop-off at the main entrance to avoid the parking lot exit scramble at day's end.
HEIGHT REQUIREMENTS
Six Flags Fiesta Texas: Major coasters require 48–54 inches. Iron Rattler and Poltergeist both require 54". Kids under 48" have a full water park and kid zone. SeaWorld: Most major rides require 42–48". Check each park's website for current requirements before purchasing tickets.
Downtown with Kids
Making downtown work with children.
Downtown SA is family-friendly when you plan around the heat and the crowds. These are the moves that hold up.
Go first — before the heat and before the crowds.
The museum is free and takes about 45 minutes if you move through it. Kids ages 8+ will get something from it; younger kids like the outside grounds and the dramaticness of it.
Best for: Ages 7+, history-curious kids
Free entry. Go before 9:30am in summer.
Best indoor activity in SA for kids under 10.
Two floors of hands-on exhibits — water table, giant climbing structure, art studio, building zone, science center. Reserve timed entry online. Allow 2.5–3 hours.
Best for: Kids 2–10, hot-afternoon activity
Book timed entry online before arrival — sells out on summer weekends.
750-foot observation deck — good for 20 minutes.
Quick activity with big payoff — the city view from 750 feet is genuinely impressive for kids. Skip the restaurant. Observation deck only.
Best for: Ages 5+, quick activity
Oldest children's amusement park still operating in the US.
The same carousel since 1925, tiny Ferris wheel, miniature train, and 13 rides scaled for small children. Pay per ride. No entry fee. Great for kids 1–7.
Best for: Toddlers and kids under 7
Coolest way to see the River Walk when kids are done walking.
Hop-on hop-off taxi service along the River Walk. Kids love the boat and it solves the 'tired legs' problem by 11am. Flag one down at any marked dock.
Best for: Any age, afternoon energy saver
Touch tanks and full marine exhibits, northwest SA.
Stingray touch tank, shark tunnel, and tropical fish exhibits. Smaller than a major-city aquarium but priced to match. Good for 2 hours.
Best for: Kids 3–12, aquarium lovers
Downtown Kids Route
Zoo & Museums
Morning activities built around the heat.
These are morning activities — arrive early, plan for 2.5–3 hours, and be back at your hotel before the midday heat peaks.
Underground cave tour — cool temps, 70°F guaranteed.
Guided 45-minute tour through massive calcite formations. Constant 70°F underground makes this the best midday hot-weather activity in the region.
Best for: All ages 4+, midday summer activity
Perfect 10am–2pm activity when outdoor heat is at its worst.
Natural history and Texas culture, worth 2 hours.
Paleontology, Texas history, South Texas wildlife, and a HEB Science Treehouse for kids. Better for school-age kids than toddlers.
Best for: Kids 8+, families interested in Texas history
Best indoor activity for kids 2–10.
Hands-on science, art, building, water play, and a massive climbing structure. Book timed entry online. Two full hours inside is realistic.
Best for: Kids 2–10, hot-afternoon rescue
One of the top zoos in the US — go early.
700+ animal species, a children's zoo area, and carousel. Arrive at 9am gates-open. Plan 3–4 hours. The flamingo section is a must. Bring hats and sunscreen.
Best for: All ages, morning activity
Arrive at gates-open. The zoo gets hot and crowded fast by 11am.
Drive-through safari — animals come to your car.
Zebras, ostriches, giraffes, and 50+ other species literally walk up to the car window. 30 minutes from downtown. Remarkable for toddlers and young kids.
Best for: Kids of all ages, especially under 8
Zoo Morning Tips
Zoo at 9am sharp, leave by noon before peak heat. Bring a small cooler with cold drinks and snacks — zoo food lines get long. Hat and sunscreen for every person. Have the DoSeum or Natural Bridge Caverns as your afternoon backup for the inevitable "I'm hot" moment.
Hill Country Day Trips
Out of the city and into the Hill Country.
The Texas Hill Country starts 20 minutes from SA. These are the best family-friendly escapes — all within 90 minutes.
The Texas summer experience — River Road, New Braunfels.
Float the Guadalupe River on an inner tube in 70°F spring-fed water. River Road has multiple tube rental operators. Takes about 2–3 hours float time. Book tubes in advance on summer weekends.
Best for: Ages 6+, active families, hot days
Book tube rentals 24 hours in advance on weekends. The river is crowded by 10am Saturday.
The original Schlitterbahn — best waterpark in Texas.
Spring-fed water, world-famous tube chutes, and a full waterpark complex. The spring-fed sections are genuinely cold. Plan a full day. Bring your own food — parking lot picnics are allowed.
Best for: Ages 5+, waterpark lovers, hot days
Hill Country Tips
Leave the hotel before 8am to beat I-35 traffic to New Braunfels. The return drive on summer Sundays peaks 4–7pm — leave the river by 3pm or stay until 6pm to miss the worst of it.
For lunch on River Road: Granzin's Meat Market in New Braunfels for brisket and sausage, or Naegelin's Bakery for kolaches and German pastries (oldest bakery in Texas).
Resort Pool Days
When the pool is the plan — and that's a good plan.
SA summer heat makes full resort pool days completely reasonable. Each resort has a different vibe.
Seven-acre water park resort — best for ages 5–14.
Full water park within the resort: spring-style lazy river, waterslides, splash zone for toddlers, and a family raft ride. The best all-around water park of the three resorts.
Best for: Kids 5–14, families who want a water park
1,100-foot lazy river, multiple pools, waterslides.
The JW has the most complete pool complex of the three resorts. The lazy river alone is a 2-hour activity. Waterslides for older kids, zero-entry areas for toddlers.
Best for: Mixed ages, families with toddlers and older kids
Arrive at the pool by 9am to claim chairs with umbrella shade.
Multiple pools, adult lap pool, family pool, and kids zone.
La Cantera's pool area is well-maintained with a dedicated family section and a quieter adult pool. Less water park, more resort pool. Better for families that want calm over slides.
Best for: Families wanting a quieter pool day
Resort Pool Tips
Claim chairs before 9am in July and August — shaded chairs are gone within an hour of opening. Most resorts allow outside food at the pool area. The resort pool bar food is overpriced; pack snacks and let the kids swim while adults eat well at a nearby table. Sunscreen every 90 minutes without exception.
Before Your Flight
Last morning in SA — make it count.
SAT security is typically fast. These are 3-hour activities that work on a departure day — all with easy access to the airport.
45-minute cave tour, 25 minutes from SAT.
If you have 3+ hours before your flight and the family hasn't done the caverns yet, this is a perfect morning. Cave is 70°F underground — nobody gets hot. On the way toward the airport if coming from the resort zone.
Best for: Families, departure day activity
First tour at 9am. Book online.
Saturday and Sunday mornings, 9am–1pm.
If your flight is afternoon or later on a weekend, the Pearl market is the best last morning in SA. Coffee, pastries, produce, live music, and the whole Pearl atmosphere.
Best for: Weekend departures, food lovers, morning activity
Saturday is biggest. Go before 11am for best selection.
Last meal before you fly — brisket by the pound.
The airport-area Rudy's on 410 is 10 minutes from SAT. Brisket, ribs, sausage, and jalapeño bread. Best last meal in SA, full stop.
Best for: Pre-flight lunch, BBQ farewell
Go between 11am and noon for peak brisket. Call ahead if you want a large order.
