THANKSGIVING THROUGH EARLY JANUARY

River Walk holiday lights, done right.

Over two million lights on the cypress trees along the River Walk — San Antonio's quieter, more beautiful answer to the holiday light shows that require a ticket and a crowd.

THE TRADITION

Two million lights on the water.

Every Thanksgiving, the city lights up the cypress trees that line the River Walk — all the way from the tourist core near the Rivercenter Mall through the quieter Museum Reach stretch near the Pearl. The lights stay up through early January.

There's also a holiday river parade — decorated barges moving down the river with lights and music. The specific dates vary each year; check the San Antonio River Authority's site for the current season's parade schedule.

HOW TO SEE THEM

Skip the worst crowds.

Museum Reach (Pearl end)

The quieter stretch — just as beautiful, a fraction of the crowd. Walk from the Pearl toward downtown along the river path. Better reflections, less noise, more cypress.

Rivercenter area (tourist core)

The most photographed section, highest density of lights, also the highest density of people. Worth seeing, but go on a weeknight and before 7pm if possible.

From a restaurant

Tables along the river with water views book fast in December. Boudro's, Casa Rio, and Chart House all have River Walk seating. Reserve at least a week out for December weekends.

Timing

Lights come on at dusk and stay on until late. The first few weekends of December are the most crowded. A Wednesday in early December is the sweet spot.

DINNER PAIRINGS

River Walk dinners worth booking.

From the verified picks on the main dining guide — all have River Walk proximity or direct water views:

Boudro's Texas Bistro

4.5★ · 8.2K reviews. Tableside guacamole. On the water. Book well ahead for December.

Paesanos Riverwalk

Italian, river terrace, reliable. Good for groups during the holiday season.

Casa Rio

The most River Walk of all River Walk restaurants — outdoor terraces directly over the water. Classic experience.

Chart House

Best water views in the tower. Holiday dinner with the lights reflecting below is genuinely special.

HOLIDAY SURGE PRICING

December weekends are the worst Uber surge of the year. Flat-rate transfers cost the same at 10pm as they did at 6pm — no algorithm, no surprise.
