Why SA for spring break
March runs 60s–80s — no summer-level heat or humidity — and every park is at full capacity. The Alamo, the Missions Trail, and the River Walk are all genuinely good this time of year. The catch: it's peak season. Book the hotel and the park tickets before you travel.
Theme park strategy
My order of operations, not just a list — go early, pick your days, and know which one to swap in when the weather turns.

One of the best mid-sized zoos in the country.
Right by Brackenridge Park, close to the Pearl. Go early in the day before it heats up — the African exhibits and the aquarium section are the reason to make the trip, and parking is easy if you're there at open.
Best for Any age, half-day trips

Orcas, coasters, and shorter lines than Six Flags.
West side of the city. Killer whale shows and a genuinely good roller coaster lineup. My honest read: better for ages 4–14, and it runs less crowded than Six Flags during peak spring break week.
Best for Families with younger kids

In-city coasters, attached water park.
The water park side runs seasonal, so check before you plan around it. Hit this one on a Tuesday or Wednesday — weekend spring break crowds are the real deal. It opens at 10am; be in that first wave through the gate.
Best for Coaster fans, teens

Underground and climate-controlled — the weather-proof pick.
Twenty minutes from downtown. Genuinely impressive for kids, and it's the move if the week turns warmer than forecast — caves don't care about the heat. Runs less crowded than any of the theme parks.
Best for A break from the heat, younger kids
The move on crowds
Hit Six Flags on a Tuesday or Wednesday — weekend spring break crowds are the real deal, and it opens at 10am, so be in that first wave. If the week turns hot, swap in Natural Bridge Caverns — underground, climate-controlled, and less crowded than any of the parks.
Hill country escape
Spring break lines up with wildflower season peaking in March–April. Canyon Lake, Gruene, and Wimberley are all within an hour and a half — an easy day trip without giving up your SA hotel.
