SAN ANTONIO NEIGHBORHOODS
King William. Mansions, river paths, and the prettiest walk in SA.
A 22-block historic district of 19th-century mansions on the river just south of downtown — quiet streets, big trees, and the anchor of Southtown. Free to walk, impossible to rush.
THE HISTORIC DISTRICT
What King William is
German merchants built King William in the late 1800s, and the mansions are still here — restored, lived-in, and lining quiet streets a ten-minute walk from downtown. The San Antonio River runs along its edge, connecting it to the River Walk in one direction and the Mission Reach trail in the other. It borders Southtown, so the galleries, bars, and restaurants of South Alamo Street are all within a few blocks.
SEE & DO
The King William walk
Start on King William Street itself and wander. 22 blocks of restored Victorian and Greek Revival mansions. Free, self-guided, best in morning light or the hour before sunset.
The district's house museum — a restored 1876 mansion with original collections and gardens. The one mansion you can actually go inside. Check tour times before you go.
The quiet stretch of the river path runs right along the district's edge. Walk north to downtown in 15 minutes or south toward the missions. No crowds, all cypress.
EAT & DRINK
Where to eat in and around King William
Breakfast at the historic Pioneer Flour Mills family home on the river — biscuits, gravy, and the original mill next door. The King William breakfast. Expect a wait on weekends; go early.
Outdoor beer garden on South Alamo, two blocks from the mansions. Dog-friendly, family-friendly, cold beer, rotating food trucks. SA neighborhood bar at its best.
Southtown's festive Tex-Mex anchor at 722 S. St. Mary's — a short walk from the district. Strong margaritas, big energy. Rooftop Lounge is 25+ with its own private entrance — main restaurant downstairs is all ages.
LOCAL TIP
Pair the King William walk with First Friday Southtown (first Friday of every month) — start with the mansions before sunset, then walk two blocks east into the gallery openings, food trucks, and live music on South Alamo.
