THE TOURIST STRIP
From Alamo Plaza south to HemisFair — Boudro's, Casa Rio, River Walk boats, souvenir shops. This is the postcard River Walk. Worth seeing once, worth knowing what it is.
THE LOCAL STRETCH
Museum Reach north of downtown — quieter, art installations, less traffic. The Southtown/King William stretch south — where locals actually walk. Mission Reach — 8 miles south through historic missions, almost no tourists.

River Walk dining picks
Modern Mexican on a calmer river stretch. Best for: style-conscious visitors who want something that doesn't feel like a tourist trap.
Best food on the River Walk. Creative Texas fine dining above the water. Best for: foodies, fine wine, scenic business dinner.
The River Walk classic. Tableside guacamole, prickly pear margaritas, water-side patio. Best for: first-night dinner, tourist strip energy.
Reliable Italian landmark. Best for: convention guests, group dinners.
Historic bar on the River Walk. Best cocktails, best back patio over the river. Best for: after-dinner drinks.

40-minute narrated boat tour. Best orientation for first-time visitors. Buy tickets at multiple River Walk docks.
The full loop is about 2.5 miles. Takes 45–60 minutes at a casual pace. Do it before committing to a restaurant.
The quieter northern extension past the Pearl. Art installations, quieter banks, less crowd.
8 miles south through 5 historic UNESCO missions. Best by bike — rentals available at the trailhead.
