HWY 290 WINE TRAIL

The Wineries — Where to Go

Wineries cluster on Hwy 290 between Fredericksburg and Stonewall. Group them by location — don't bounce back and forth on the highway. Two or three wineries is the right number for a day trip.

Becker Vineyards
Top Pick

The benchmark. Bistro on-site, farm-to-table fare, Texas-grown grapes. Book the tasting in advance. Best overall first winery for almost any visitor.

Best for: First-timers, food + wine, couples

William Chris Vineyards
Top Pick

For serious wine drinkers. Terroir-driven, 100% Texas grapes, educational tasting. The staff explains the wine intelligently. Worth going out of your way for.

Best for: Wine enthusiasts, quality over quantity

Grape Creek Vineyards
Top Pick

Tuscan-style villa with vineyard views. Beautiful setting. Multiple Merlot, Cab Sauv, Tempranillo varietals on the list.

Best for: Atmosphere, photos, couples

Pedernales Cellars
Strong Pick

Stunning Hill Country views. Mediterranean-inspired bites in the tasting room. The Tempranillo is consistently good.

Augusta Vin
Strong Pick

Elevated tasting room, chef-driven menu. Wine and food pairings done correctly.

Calais Winery
Strong Pick

Boutique, quality-first. A local believer's pick. Smaller production, worth finding.

Ab Astris Winery
Low-Key

Family-run in Stonewall. Oak grove setting, often live music on weekends. No rush energy — the right last stop.

Adega Vinho
Low-Key

Laid-back, elegant wines, vinyl records spinning. Good place to end a long tasting day.

Routing Tip

Start east of Fredericksburg on Hwy 290 (Becker, Pedernales) and work your way west toward town. End on Main Street for lunch or dinner. Don't try to hit both ends of the trail in one day — it's 40 miles long.

Fredericksburg Main Street German heritage town

GERMAN HERITAGE TOWN

Main Street Fredericksburg

German settlers founded Fredericksburg in 1846. The heritage is real — architecture, bakeries, and traditions that survived 180 years.

National Museum of the Pacific War

World-class WWII museum. Former home of Admiral Chester Nimitz. Plan 3–4 hours minimum. One of the best museums in Texas.

Best for: History lovers, full day

Main Street

Eight blocks of boutiques, galleries, antiques, and restaurants. Walk it from end to end before committing to a restaurant.

Fredericksburg Brewing Co

Oldest craft brewery in Texas. Good food, outdoor patio.

Hondo's on Main

Best live music on Main Street. Outdoor stage, cold beer.

Clear River Pecan Company

Local pecans, pralines, gifts. Essential stop.

IF YOU HAVE MORE TIME

Beyond the Wineries

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Reserve required

4,000-year-old granite dome. Summit hike is moderate, views are worth it. RESERVE IN ADVANCE at recreation.gov — they sell out. Plan 2–3 hours.

Old Tunnel State Park

Seasonal bat flight at dusk. Free, call ahead for timing. April–October.

Willow City Loop

16-mile scenic drive through private ranch land. Bluebonnets in spring are extraordinary. Drive slowly and plan at least an hour.
