Hamilton parks at the Majestic for two weeks — here’s how to play it

Sixteen performances, twelve dates, five of them matinees — the one big event of late summer where you still pick your night, and the matinee is the cheat code nobody tells visitors about.

Hamilton sits down at the Majestic Theatre July 28 through August 9 — sixteen performances across twelve dates, dark only on Monday, August 3.
It’s the anchor event of late July and early August downtown — the one big thing in the window where you still pick your date instead of the date picking you.
Five of the twelve dates have a matinee, and in 100-degree season the matinee is the cheat code — the Friday, August 7 afternoon show is the sleeper of the run.

When the show lets out, don’t fight the sidewalk — nightcap at the Esquire while the crush clears, then stroll home along the water.

I keep a demand sheet for my own driving — every show at every big room downtown, rated by how hard the crowd hits. All sixteen Hamilton performances are flagged a strong draw. Nothing else on my sheet holds that rating for two straight weeks. That tells you two things: this is the event of the window, and none of these will be a quiet night at the theater.

Where you are

The Majestic is on Houston Street, downtown proper — a short walk from the Riverwalk hotel core. If you’re sleeping downtown, leave the car wherever it is; this is a walking night. If you’re out at the resorts or La Cantera, budget a real drive in and don’t cut it close.

How the run lays out

Nightly Tuesday through Friday, July 28–31 — 7:30 curtain, out around 10:15.
Two-show days Saturday and Sunday, August 1–2 — matinee plus evening. Saturday matinee at 2:00, Sunday at 1:00.
Dark Monday, August 3.
Nightly Tuesday through Thursday, August 4–6 — 7:30.
Two shows Friday, August 7 — yes, a Friday 1:00 matinee — and two Saturday, August 8 (2:00 and 8:00; Saturday evenings run 8:00, out around 10:45).
The closing performance is the 1:00 matinee on Sunday, August 9. There is no closing-night evening show — if you want the last one, it’s a Sunday afternoon.

One honest flag: some curtain times on my sheet are venue-typical estimates, not gospel. When your ticket prints a time, believe the ticket, not me.

The matinee is the cheat code

Five of the twelve dates have a matinee, and this is where visitors win. It’s still 100-degree season out there. A matinee puts you inside a dark, cold, gorgeous room for the worst hours of the afternoon, and you walk out between roughly 3:45 and 4:45 with the entire evening still in your pocket — the river at golden hour, when it finally turns humane, then dinner, then the water after dark. The Friday, August 7 matinee is the sleeper of the whole run: an afternoon show almost nobody thinks to look for, and your Friday night stays wide open.

The evening version works too — a 7:30 weeknight curtain means an early dinner at 5:30, an easy walk to the marquee, and you’re out by 10:15 with the river still awake. Get inside early either way, just to look up. The ceiling in that 1929 room is a night sky with clouds that drift. I mean that literally.

The pre-show hour

The skip

The River Walk strip dinner before curtain. It’s slow, it’s a markup, and a two-show Saturday puts real crowds on that water. Have the river drink for the view if you want it, then walk one block off for the food. And when the show lets out, don’t fight the sidewalk — sixteen strong nights means a real crush at the doors. The move is a nightcap at the Esquire while it clears, then stroll home along the water.
