Not a list — the edit. The two or three things actually worth your Friday-to-Sunday, the one trap to skip, and exactly how I’d play a 101° weekend, from a local who drives it every night.
Willie’s verdict
Front-loaded and stacked — Friday’s the big one.
Two arena-caliber shows Friday, baseball all weekend, and the only real enemy is the heat. Play the timing right and it’s a great one; wing it and you’ll spend it in a parking lot.
Everybody publishes a “things to do this weekend” list. This isn’t that. This is the edit — the handful of things actually worth your time, the trap to skip, and how I’d run it if it were my weekend. Here’s the honest version.
If you do one thing
Missions baseball, Saturday night — 7:05 at Wolff Stadium, ten to twenty bucks. The worst of the heat’s off by first pitch, the beer’s cold, and it’s the most San Antonio night in town that barely costs a thing. Family or date, it works either way.
Willie’s move
Me? I’m taking my nephew to that Missions game — top row, cheap seats, a bag of peanuts. The best seats in the house are the ones where a kid’s watching his first ballgame. That’s my Saturday, and I wouldn’t trade it for the arena.
Willie’s Saturday, dealt
Want the whole day handed to you? This is how I’d run Saturday, start to finish:
- 9am — Pearl Farmers Market. Before 10 or parking turns into a sport. Coffee, breakfast tacos, the best free morning in the city.
- Noon to 4 — the heat wins, so let it. The McNay (art disguised as air conditioning) or the caverns up north. A nap counts too.
- 7:05 — Missions vs. the Corpus Christi Hooks. Cheap seats, cold beer, ballpark under the lights.
- After — tacos, one block off the river. Never on it. That’s where the real food lives.
The big rooms — and how to actually work them
Two arena-and-theater nights this weekend. The shows are the easy part; the logistics are where people lose the evening. Here’s what the ticket site won’t tell you:
Carin León at Frost Bank Center
Friday, 8p — a massive regional-Mexican night. Eat downtown BEFORE, one block off the river; arena food is a hostage situation. Get there early — the lots back up well before doors — and don’t fight the exit. Fifteen thousand people empty into one lot at once; the move is a nightcap while it clears, then roll out easy.

Friday, 7:30p — touring Broadway in a 1929 movie palace. Get there early just to look up: the ceiling is a Spanish night sky with clouds that drift. Dinner nearby, not on the water.

Both those shows are downtown, so eat downtown — one block off the river, never on it. My sealed picks within a few minutes of the marquees: Bohanan’s for the big steak night, or the Esquire Tavern for the river drink and a proper bar dinner. Neither is for sale; both earn it.
The sleeper
Drum Corps International Southwestern Championship — Saturday 1:30p at the Alamodome. Sounds niche; it isn’t. Elite marching brass at a level that puts a lump in your throat, and it’s ice-cold indoors while it’s 101° outside. Best heat-beat on the whole list, and nobody’s talking about it.
The skip
Don’t eat on the River Walk strip before the arena show. It’s slow, it’s a markup, and you’ll miss the opener. Have the river drink for the view if you want it, then walk one block off the water where the food earns your night. That one move fixes most weekends.
Book by
Carin León and Wicked will be thin or gone by Friday afternoon — if you’re going, buy today. The Missions game, the Alamodome, and every free thing on this list you can walk right up to.
Depending on who you are
- With kids — the Missions game or the Pearl market. Easy, cheap, cool enough.
- Date night — Wicked, then a rooftop cap; the Esquire’s back windows face the river.
- On a budget — “The Saga” light show at San Fernando (free) and the river after dark. A whole night for the price of parking.
- Melting — the Alamodome (Drum Corps) or the McNay. When it’s 101°, air conditioning is an attraction.
The free move (always)
- Pearl Farmers Market — Sat 9–1, Sun 10–2. Before 10.
- “The Saga” at San Fernando Cathedral — Fri–Sun, 9 & 9:30p, free. The 1738 facade turned into a projection show.
- The River Walk after dark — Museum Reach north, the stretch tourists never find.
The weather call
Near 101° and it’s July, so afternoon storms pop up out of nowhere. Outdoor stuff before 10 or after 5; if the sky opens Saturday, the McNay, the Alamodome, and the Pearl are your dry pivots. Check back Friday — if something big drops or sells out, it lands here first.
