A family weekend — and the big show waits for Tuesday.
The marquee this weekend is built for kids, the Missions are home under the lights, and everything free still works. Beat the afternoon heat and it’s an easy, good one — then save the arena night for Lionel Richie on Tuesday.
Everybody posts a “things to do this weekend” list. This isn’t that. It’s the edit — the two or three things actually worth your Friday-to-Sunday, the free moves that never miss, and how I’d run it if it were my weekend. Here’s the honest version.
If you’ve got kids
Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live: Glow-N-Fire, at the Frost Bank Center — Saturday 11:30 AM and 6:30 PM, Sunday 1:30 PM. Mega-Wrex, Tiger Shark, the new Rhinomite, and a fire-breathing, car-crushing robot dinosaur — the whole loud, beautiful mess. It’s indoors and ice-cold while it’s 100° outside, which is half the reason to go. If the little ones fade in the heat, take the 11:30 Saturday show and keep the afternoon free.
Willie’s move
The Frost Bank Center is on the east side, not downtown — so give that side of town its own morning. Early lunch, the 11:30 monster trucks, home before the worst of the heat. Don’t try to bolt it onto a downtown night.
The night move: the Missions, under the lights
The San Antonio Missions host the Frisco RoughRiders at Wolff Stadium this weekend — cheap seats, cold beer, ballpark once the sun’s down and the worst of the heat is off. Saturday the 25th is a fireworks night, so if the sky show matters, take the Saturday game. Ten to twenty bucks and you can practically walk up. It’s the most San Antonio night in town that barely costs a thing — family or date, it works either way.
The food move
Eating downtown around it? One block off the river, never on it — that’s where the food earns your night. My sealed picks: Bohanan’s for the big-steak occasion, or the Esquire Tavern for the river drink and a proper bar dinner. Both carry my seal; neither is for sale.

- Pearl Farmers Market — Saturday 9 AM–1 PM, Sunday 9 AM–1 PM (summer hours). Before 10 or parking turns into a sport. Coffee, breakfast tacos, the best free morning in the city.
- “The Saga” at San Fernando Cathedral — nightly at 9:00 PM, free. The 1738 facade turned into a projection show, and it never gets old.
- The River Walk after dark — the Museum Reach stretch north, the part tourists never find.

The weather call
It’s late July, so it’s near 100° and afternoon storms pop up out of nowhere. Outdoor stuff before 10 or after 5; if the sky opens, the monster trucks, the McNay, and the Pearl are your dry pivots. Check back Friday — if something big drops or sells out, it lands here first.
The skip
Don’t eat on the River Walk strip before a night out. Slow, marked up, and rushed. Have the river drink for the view if you want it, then walk one block off the water where the food earns your night.
